So I've been going over some old stuff from my early days in Hard Knocks... and thought I'd pass on these items..this was posted by my former GM Chasm who got it from his old Feds Destiny and United Front.... written by Sad Man, TJ, RockAttitude and such.... for your benefit.. they might help you with your character.. or for role-playing ideas...

A Lesson on Gimmicks - By SadMan

what is a gimmick?

a gimmick is what your wrestler has that makes him different from other wrestlers. a gimmick can be anything:

* what your wrestler looks like: khali is a big, scary guy from india
* what is your wrestling style: mark henry is a power wrestler, using moves that need a lot of strength
* what is your wrestler outside the ring: kurt angle is an olympic gold medallist
* what is your wrestler's personality or beliefs: jbl is arrogant and thinks he is better than everybody

the list is just a short one. there are other ways you can define your gimmick.

you need a good gimmick to help you be different from the other 49 wrestlers in this roster. find a gimmick you are comfortable with, and which can work to get you noticed.

you should also find ways to make your gimmick grow. try not to stick to the same old thing over and over, or else people will see your character as stale, and will look for someone else to entertain them.

what is a face/heel?

a face is a good guy in wrestling. this means as a good guy there are some things you cannot do, because they are not what good guys do. for example, would you consider someone to be a good guy if he throws a ton of horsecrap in your car for absolutely no reason?

a heel is a bad guy in wrestling. this means they do things bad guys do, and make people and fans angry at them. if you found someone throwing horsecrap in your car for no reason, you would naturally see him as a heel, because he just did something to hurt you and make you angry.

it is important that you stay consistent: if you say you are a face, don't do evil things on innocent wrestlers and people. if you are a heel, you must do things which will get everyone to hate you.

what is a tweener?

a tweener is someone who claims to be neither face nor heel. in reality, it means he wants to have it both ways. a tweener wants to be able to do nasty, evil things, but still be cheered by the fans. it is like having a priest have sex with little boys, and still be allowed to give mass and hear your confession.

make a gimmick you can easily play
some gimmicks are easier to play than others.

if you want to roleplay as a zombie wrestler, ask yourself how would this character behave, how is he supposed to move and talk, what does he look like?

if you want to roleplay as a wrestler who raps, you would have to rap in your promos.

if you want to roleplay as a rich man, you must show it with the things rich people have.

if you want to roleplay as a wrestler who used to be a soldier, you can add military jargon to your promos, and make your character look like he used to be in the military.

if you want to use yourself as the wrestler, change something about him so he is not 100% you. steve austin, vince mcmahon, and the rock are very popular because they are basically playing themselves but with some changes to their normal personality. vince mcmahon is not the most evil man alive, but because he is the chairman of wwe, he must do some things which are not popular, and he exaggerates these things to make the character you see on tv.

be consistent with your gimmick
this means if your character is a good guy, you must play as a good guy until you decide you want to be a bad guy.

if your character drinks and smokes a lot, we should expect him to carry cigarettes and liquor all the time.

if your character is supposed to be a wrestling carpenter, he should be wearing a carpenter's clothes, carrying carpenter tools and building things when he is not wrestling.

if your character is supposed to be an arrogant prick, your roleplay must have you behave like an arrogant prick.

be consistent within your own promos
sometimes wrestlers roleplay where they come out to the ring and talk about someone, then suddenly the same wrestler is talking from the titantron. that confuses people, and makes you look like you don't know what you're doing.

always keep in mind what you want to talk about when you roleplay. do you want to get another wrestler's attention? do you want to hype a big match you are about to have? do you want to just build your wrestler's personality?

Role-Playing 101 - By A.C. Ellington

First of all the description (Where are you, why are you there, what are you wearing) The more descrptive you are, the more people will read into ur rp and get a good feel for what is happenning

AC Ellington, dressed as per usual in one of his perfect three piece suits, sits at his desk in his office. Looking through some paperwork, AC looks up into the camera. Ready to address the Destiny Wrestling fans and employees.

The text (No one seems to struggle with the text, except the one line reply's) Have a point or several points... Just try get some text down and avoid the quick fire one liners!!!

AC: Hello folks, welcome to my Destiny Wrestling public address. So far here in the best new Roster around, we have put down three top level shows. I hope that yo have enjoyed them, I certainly have. The crowds have slowly been increasing as the word spreads about this promotion and its fantastic inovating ways.

How bout a short descrptive bit to split the teaxt up!

AC places the papers down on the desk and stands up... Adjusting his tie as he smiles...

AC: Trust me when I say, this high quality stuff we have been pumping out two nights a week... Is far from stopping. The standard will continue to rise and rise as we compete to be the very best out there! And trust me when I say, this will come around, eventually! Now last of all, I would like to congratulate our first championship winners... Well done guys, you are now the for figures of this company, I expect you to act in such a way.

Finish (Describe the end of the RP, a wave a laugh a wink or just leaving the room.)

Ellington smiles as the scene slolwy fades to black.

------------------

An RP can be anything you want

* A challenge
* A complaint
* A memory
* Developement for your character (why is he the way he is)
* ANYTHING but keep it realistic

**Now here's my guideline that I made up for HKW**

RP Guidelines:
Please don't use "chat" language, such as: b/c, whatev, r, u, etc....write your RP like a paper, with proper grammar (where possible) and with proper English.

Contact anyone who you are going to use in your RP BEFORE you post it, to get their consent. They may have other plans unknown to you, or they may want their character portrayed differently. If you can't get in touch with someone then just leave them out of the RP and make it open-ended where they can reply if they want to.

Make it realistic. If you need ideas about how to make things realistic my suggestion is to pick up a fiction book and read through some of it. Since this is a text based RP you want to make the reader feel as if they are actually there. For example, instead of saying: "Pike is standing in the parking lot looking at the cars." you could say, "It's pitch black outside, with the only light coming from the lamp posts, which cast an eerie glow over the parking lot. There is a cold breeze that makes Pike's coat sway as his eyes survey the parking lot attempting to find something irregular."

Make the RP your own. Don't copy off of others RP's or off of WWE's RP's. For example we have steeltown death matches, and door matches. Find something new and exciting to bring to the Fed.

If you want to practice your RP'ing, use the dorm area to practice, that's what it was made for.

Posting Guidelines:

Please make sure that you post your RP in the proper section. If it's in the ring then put in in the "in the ring" section. If you are replying to a post made by someone else, then reply to their original post, don't make a new topic as this just clutters up the forum.

If you are posting something that is out of context (OOC) then make sure that you put stars and make it look like this ***OOC comment here***, if there is an OOC comment on your post don't reply to it as if that person were RP'ing as they are not.
